When selecting or editing plants for a garden space, I prioritize native and pollinator-friendly options and suggest native alternatives to common non-native choices. This approach works beautifully in naturalistic designs but can also be adapted for more formal plantings.
Have open space you'd like to establish for ecosystem support? I will work with you to establish a basic layout and framework for installing a rapidly establishing native habitat planting, building healthy soil and incorporating trees, shurbs, flowering perennials, grasses with the aim of establishing fill in the short term with vertical layers in the long term. Design approach is flexible and responsive. Base rate of $9/sq foot, minimum of 100 sq feet.
Let me come visit your space, hear your challenges, and share ideas for low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly garden and habitat planting that you can turn into a plan to work with me, another landscaper or manageable DIY steps! Site visit / assessment fee is $100 for approximately 1 hour on site (Lexington & neighboring towns).
Includes any Q&A, ideas or troubleshooting I can help with in that timeframe and a brief follow-up email with any relevant resources based on our meeting.

Looking for an edit, update or something to fill an empty spot? I can help move the process forward quickly with quick, intentionally low-fidelity visualization. I begin with a photo of the space, and then layer in hand-sketched plants in the approximate shape and tone of what might work. The idea is to illustrate talking points for the possibilities and establish initial planting goals. This low-cost, efficient approach is a great way to skip the traditional design process and get a feel for what could work in your garden. Examples >
Struggling with invasive vines, garlic mustard, or the like? I can help both with the (wo)man power, as well as some creative defensive strategies, such as using aggressive natives to crowd them out.
Let me help fill your space with the perfect plants! I can source and install plants from local contractor-only nurseries & my own garden right away, or select bare-root trees, seasonal bulbs and more from trusted online suppliers, pooling together orders when possible to take advantage of volume discounts. I prioritize economical options and keep an eye out for relevant sales to provide you with the best value.
You know it needs help but you're not sure where to start. I will assess your garden and tackle common problems, such as overgrowth, dead plants, large weeds, and invasive species. No planning is necessary, though I'm happy to chat if you have specific needs, and/or discuss how to repurpose existing plants to maximize what you already have. Depending on the size and state of your gardens, we can discuss a reasonable time cap. Often just 2-4 hours of my time is enough for a noticeable difference.
I can help you add food to your landscaping this, from herb borders, fruit tree additions, a mushroom bed or a full front-yard re-visioning. Planning a productive space can be a long-term project, and fall/winter is the best time for planning new spaces, but there are steps that can be taken year round in this process.
For shrubs, I avoid hedge trimmers, as they damage branches and encourage tip growth, leading to frequent trims in an endless cycle. Instead, I aim to re-size and re-shape following more natural growth patterns. I can work through issue of "flop" by leveraging the laws of physics, in addition to those of biology. I'm also happy to discuss the tools and techniques I use to achieve long-lasting results.
Have an empty space where a garden could be growing? Just completed a construction project and need to start from scratch? You can either choose to let me select and plant a selection of ecologically beneficial, easy-care plants within a set budget. Or we can work through a more involved visualization and planning process to best meet your needs.
Many gardens have both empty spaces and areas that are crowded with mature plants. I can help leverage the resources you may already have either with specific suggestions or creative license. Note that most plants do not like to be moved or divided during the summer, when we are most likely to be thinking about what we want where, unfortunately. This is a task best done in fall or early spring, depening on the plant.

Applies to Lexington and bordering towns. (Additional fees may apply for travel time beyond this area.)

Basic garden maintenance is billed at $40/hour, with a 2-hour minimum.
This rate includes on-site work as well as reasonable off-site time directly related to the job (such as waste disposal or preparation of specialty tools). Travel time beyond 15 minutes from southwest Lexington is billed at the same hourly rate. Materials are billed separately as needed. I can provide plant pricing or project-based estimates when appropriate, and I typically work within an agreed hourly cap or planting budget.
Pocket forests, habitat / native landscaping installations are priced separately from maintenance work:
My rate is $9 per sq ft (200 sq ft minimum), $12 per sq ft for pilot areas (100–199 sq ft) with a $1,000 project coordination fee (per installation phase). This includes site preparation, plant selection, sourcing, and installation of plug- and sapling-sized native plants, with a focus on long-term, low-maintenance habitat zones that support biodiversity. More detailed options and add-ons are available upon request.

Large-scale plants & trees. I am strong and I have a large car, but if I can't carry it or put it into my car, I won't be able to move it. That said, my car can hold nursery trees up to around 5' in length and I can happily carry and plant anything in up to a 5 gallon pot.
Masonry
Irrigation systems
Lawncare - mowing, weed wacking, edging etc. I can help with things like small-scale aeration, clover overseeding, and suggestions for lawn alternatives.
Major earthworks / moving of materials, large-scale grading. I can fill holes, and do some small-scale stuff, but with hand tools only.
Raised bed installation - I'm happy to suggest location, size, etc., but I am not a carpenter.
Small weed management - e.g. to create open-soil spaces around plants. Why don't I do this? It is an unending task that I find provides little long-term value, and is hard on my hands. I would, however, happily discuss alternatives to avoid this altogether.
